Oops
Rumors of this E-zine's Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated
Last week I sent an email to subscribers announcing the last of the Authentic Promotion teleclasses. Some folks thought the announcement meant the end of this e-zine. Not so. Only the teleclass is being retired so that I can move on to new projects.

Authentic Promotion SOLD OUT!
The final teleclass sold out less than 24 hours after I announced it. I'm recording the class, and you can still order the tapes at the pre-release discount. A full description and a link to my secure online order form are here. If you prefer not to order online, simply print the order form and fax it to me at 801-996-7022 or phone me at 360-697-7022.

Simple Gifts
A Daily Discernment Practice
What do you do when you have too much information? When it’s hard to distinguish among the alarm bells of homeostasis, the siren songs of wish fulfillment, and the call of your heart felt purpose? There are times in business and in life when it's just not possible to know what to do next based on your usual sources of information. This week's simple gift is a practice that can cultivate the discernment to know when to act and when to wait. Email discernment@authenticpromotion.com for your complimentary Quick Rise Discernment Guide. This is my most popular autoresponder. Feel free to pass it on.

Open for Business
Is It Time to Clean House?
Recently I received an email from a Web site called ShareYourExperiences.com. It claimed that someone had visited the site requesting information about my company and invited me to visit and find out what people were saying about me. When I went to the site, I discovered that I would have to register in order to access any data and that, if I wanted to read posts about a company (including my own), I would need to pay a fee.

That alerted me to the likelihood of a scam, so I did a search and discovered several resources debunking this outfit. It is a scam, designed strictly to separate you from your hard-earned money. I made a mental note to let readers know about it because I know many of you have business Web sites or email addresses.

That might have been the end of the story, but for one thing. You see, that email had sparked a flicker of fear in my solar plexus, an uneasy wondering about who might have something negative to say about me and why. I knew that I had a former client or two who would have something negative to say and with good reason. In fact, in the days before receiving the scam-mail, I had been taking stock and preparing to make amends.

Understand, I'm not talking about having done anything unethical, and I don't expect myself to be perfect. I do expect myself to acknowledge my mistakes and to give anyone I've wronged an opportunity to tell me what I might do to set it right. This is an easier policy to hold than to implement, and I'd been waffling, avoiding the conversations because I did not know how they might turn out. Would they cost me money? Might someone be unkind?

When the bogus email arrived, I realized that not having these conversations was feeding a worm of anxiety that would continue gnawing at my self-regard until I cleaned house. I imagine there are others who can benefit from the same process I used, so I'm sharing it here:

1. I listed the people with whom I had unfinished business.

2. I identified my contribution to the situation.

3. I named what I was protecting or seeking by my actions.

4. I asked myself if I were willing to make amends.

5. If I was not willing to make amends now, I asked if I were willing to become willing to make them.

6. I shared my list with a trusted confidante (you might choose a coach or therapist). I asked that they first listen so that I could hear what I had written. This helped reveal parts that felt incomplete, inaccurate, or self-serving.

7. I invited my confidante to provide feedback for the sole purpose of helping me to sweep my side of the street.

8. I identified that action I would take to amend each situation.

9. When I made amends, I what else, if anything, I could do to set things straight.

Cleaning house requires courage, discernment, and honesty. It is virtually impossible to do well alone. We are likely to be either too hard or too easy on ourselves because we cannot see ourselves with sufficient perspective to make accurate assessments when pride or fear are involved.

The business benefits of regular housecleaning include improved relationships, clearer standards, and a reputation for honesty and integrity. In time we lose our fear of making mistakes because we know we can count on ourselves to put them right. That frees us to pursue audacious goals with humility and ambition, and that’s good for just about everyone.
